Description

Would you like to be the next Spielberg? Fancy seeing your name in lights on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? They all started somewhere! Come along to this family-friendly beginner course and be inspired to have a go.

Total Duration: 4 hours
Goal: Create a 1-3 minute short film
Equipment Needed: Smartphones (fully charged), free editing apps (e.g., CapCut, VN Editor, DaVinci Resolve), notebook and pen

Planning and Pre-Production (The Story)

Goal: Define the story and prepare for filming

Activities:
- Idea Generation: Brainstorm family-friendly ideas (documentary, short story, stop-motion)
- Scripting/Storyboarding: Draw a 5-6 shot storyboard to visualise the story
- Scheduling: Plan roles (director, camera operator, actor) and locations

Production (Shooting & Techniques)

Goal: Capture high-quality footage

Activities:
- Camera Settings: Set up phones to shoot in HD (1080p or 4K), 24 or 30fps
- Cinematic Techniques: Use gridlines for framing, lock focus and exposure, and work with natural light
- Angles: Practise low-angle, top-down, and steady panning shots
- Audio: Record clear sound by keeping the phone close to the subject

Post-Production (Editing & Premiere)

Goal: Assemble the film and share the result

Activities:
- Editing Basics: Import footage into an app, trim clips, and arrange them according to the storyboard
- Adding Polish: Add music, transitions, and titles
- Colour Correction: Make simple adjustments to enhance colour
- Screening: Watch the completed family film together

Note: Two adults per adult place. Suitable for children aged 8+ years.   

What are the entry requirements for this course?
This course is suitable if you're a beginner and want to learn about this subject, and you don't have relevant knowledge or experience.

What will I need to bring?
Please bring a fully charged smartphone with you. Please also bring photo ID with you e.g. passport or driving licence.

Will I be assessed?
There is no formal assessment for this course. Your tutor will provide feedback to help you improve.
